Bala Hassan is a distinguished legal practitioner, retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, and respected security strategist whose career reflects decades of exceptional public service, academic excellence, and professional leadership. A Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, he is widely recognized for his contributions to policing, law, criminal justice administration, and national security development.

He began his career with the Nigeria Police Force in 1982 and rose through the ranks through dedication, professionalism, and outstanding operational leadership. Over the course of his illustrious career, he served in several strategic capacities across Nigeria, including Officer-in-Charge of Anti-Robbery, Divisional Police Officer in major Lagos divisions, Area Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police, and Commissioner of Police in Edo, Rivers, Abia, and Borno States. His leadership was consistently marked by discipline, strategic thinking, and a strong commitment to public safety and institutional excellence.

He also held key national appointments, including Commissioner of Police in charge of the Police Mobile Force and the Legal Department at Force Headquarters, Abuja. His vast experience and exceptional leadership later earned him appointment as Assistant Inspector-General of Police and Commandant of the Police Staff College, Jos, where he played a vital role in mentoring senior officers and shaping future leaders in law enforcement. He subsequently served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 10 Sokoto and Zone 2 Lagos, overseeing policing operations across multiple states.

Academically accomplished, Bala Hassan holds a Ph.D. in Policing and Community Safety from London Metropolitan University, alongside multiple advanced degrees in Law, Strategic Studies, and Criminology. He is also a Fellow of the National War College (fwc), reflecting his strong background in strategic security and national policy.

Following his retirement from active police service, he transitioned into private legal practice as Principal Partner at Udah Bala James & Partners, where he continues to provide legal and strategic advisory services. He is also a published author and a member of several respected professional bodies, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
